MATH. Inventé par le mathématicien Neper. Le système népérien. Un système de logarithmes joue un grand rôle en analyse, c'est le système des logarithmes népériens, du nom de son inventeur Neper (CULLMANN, DENIS-PAPIN, KAUFMANN, Calcul informat., 1960, p.17).

Prononc.: [], fém. [-]. Étymol. et Hist. 1840 (Ac. Compl. 1842). Du nom du mathématicien écossais John Neper ou Napier (1550-1617), inventeur des logarithmes, aut. du Mirifici logarithmorum canonis descriptio en 1614.
